Best AI search visibility tools: measure bookings, not clicks

The best AI search visibility tools will count what happens inside the answer, not the click after it. Booking buttons now appear on the engine's surface in at least one place: home services listings in Google AI Mode. A tool that reports citations or visits alone leaves out what happens inside the answer.

That is the connection between three stories from the past week. Google added booking to AI Mode. ChatGPT ads have a conversion problem. Agents are a threat to intermediaries like DoorDash. In each, the question of what counts moves to a place the old metric may not reach.

AI search visibility has the same hole as ChatGPT ads

AI search visibility has a gap that echoes the conversion problem Digiday describes in ChatGPT advertising: a click count covers only a small share of visits. In a study published August 5, 2026, researchers found that clicks to sources cited in AI Overviews occur in only about 1% of visits to AI Overviews. A tool that reports clicks reads from that 1% slice.

Digiday's graphic, published November 5, 2026, carries the headline "Six thousand brands later, ChatGPT ads still have a conversion problem". Its summary says OpenAI's ad revenue targets depend on advertiser demand, measurement and monetisation. Measurement is on that list, and the headline says ChatGPT ads still have a conversion problem.

The short answer to which tool to license is this. The tool to license is the one that ties what an engine showed to what a customer did. An impression count from the platform is the vendor's claim. A booking in the advertiser's own log is a record.

An agency owner can act on this now. Ask any visibility vendor for the conversion record behind a report. If it stops at citations or clicks, it stops one step before the revenue.

Google put the booking button inside the answer

Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google added home services booking to AI Mode. Partners include Angi Home, Thumbtack, Housecall and GetJobber, with ServiceTitan to follow. Google adds booking buttons to the home services listings in AI Mode results.

Read that as a measurement problem. Search Engine Roundtable reports booking buttons on the listings; whether a booking through that button also produces a website visit is not stated in the article.

Here is the inference, and it is ours, not the article's. In a booking-enabled answer, whether a business appears with a button likely depends on the partner feed behind the listing. That makes platform membership part of visibility. It is a data-integration question more than a content question. An agency that resells search to home-services clients should record which booking partners each client is on, next to which answers cite them.

The wider evidence says ranking will not stand in for this. In a study published October 1, 2026, IMC 2026 researchers measuring Google AI Overviews found that nearly 30% of AIO-cited domains do not appear in the co-displayed first-page results. They wrote that this indicates a source selection mechanism distinct from Google's ranking algorithm. A client's rank report therefore does not fully predict who gets cited.

SaaStr's show adds the market-structure side. Its episode title asks why agents are an existential risk to DoorDash. The same episode covers DoorDash buying Instacart. Our read, not the episode's: when an agent sits between the customer and the marketplace, the marketplace may lose the relationship. The same question applies to booking partners in AI Mode.

Engines disagree on citations, so one reading means little

A visibility score is only as good as its stability. A published study shows that ChatGPT and Perplexity disagree on which domains they cite.

A study published September 6, 2026 by Deepak Gupta tracked 180,000 AI answers. It found that ChatGPT and Perplexity cite the same domains only about 11% of the time for identical queries in the same window. Writesonic, in a study published July 22, 2026, ran 161,286 prompts across four platforms and measured citation overlap using Jaccard similarity. Two engines, two panels, two different sets of cited domains. One engine's report does not describe another's.

The platforms' own logs also have gaps. Google's Search Console help page records that a logging error decreased impressions in the Generative AI performance report for August 13 to August 17, 2026. A trend line from that report that crosses those dates has a dent that the traffic did not cause. A report that does not annotate it invites a wrong story about the client's performance.

Where does content fit? A study published October 22, 2026 by Surfer found that the more fan-out queries a page ranked for, the more likely it was cited in the AI Overview, with a Spearman correlation of 0.77. That is a correlation, not proof of cause. Still, it points to a decision. Our inference, not the study's: for a home-services page, that points to covering the sub-questions an engine might ask, such as price, availability and service area. A page can be checked against that list of sub-questions.

The same discipline applies to agent traffic. Our earlier look at what ChatGPT-User fetched from product pages in one week separated fetches from visits for the same reason. The log and the click are different events.

What the recorder has to hold, and why licensing wins

Simon Willison's weblog lists datasette-agent 0.5a0 and datasette-llm 0.1a10, both version-numbered as alpha releases. Both releases are public, at early alpha version numbers.

What code alone cannot give is the record. A trustworthy visibility dataset has four properties:

  • Coverage: a prompt panel that spans engines, since overlap between them is low.
  • Provenance: each row names the engine, the prompt, the answer and the read date.
  • Freshness: reads repeat on a schedule, so each answer is tied to its read date.
  • A way to test it: known platform anomalies, such as the August 13 to 17 logging error, are annotated against the series.

A recorder that starts late holds no read dates before its start.

This is where licensing beats both building and hiring. A build starts its history on the day it ships. A licensed tool is worth asking about for its panel, its schedule and its annotation practice. Our earlier piece on hiring an executive versus licensing a measurement tool works through that arithmetic for agencies.

A team that resells search can change four things this week:

  1. Report booking and lead events from the client's own logs beside any citation count.
  2. Record which booking partners each home-services client is listed on.
  3. Show every figure with its engine, sample size and read date, and mark known platform anomalies on the chart.
  4. Stop using rank as a stand-in for citation.

The measure to adopt is the one the engine cannot hand back with a flattering label. It is the booking that lands in the client's own system.

The owner-and-signals data API, the AI visibility report and the content engine as a service can each be licensed, with terms quoted on a call. The inquiry page is at smarttechinvest.com/licensing, and product-blog evidence from the data products is at drivedecision.smarttechinvest.com.
