An EPA-rated range north of 400 miles on the Extended Range pack means you can tow, haul, and road-trip without the math anxiety that's killed EV pickup adoption so far. But "solves range anxiety" and "makes financial sense" are two different questions. I own a gas truck and a fully electric daily driver, and the honest answer here is uncomfortable for a $600,000-word EV blog to say: at roughly $80,000 MSRP, the Sierra EV AT4 does not beat a comparably equipped gas Sierra 1500 AT4 over five years for a typical 15,000-mile-a-year owner in Michigan. At 15,000 miles a year, the Sierra EV AT4 uses about 7,050 kWh annually. The gas AT4 burns about 833 gallons.

The Sierra EV AT4 weighs roughly 3,000+ lbs more than its gas twin — Ultium battery packs are heavy — and that weight, combined with regenerative-braking torque delivery, shortens tire life meaningfully.

Even in the best-case scenario — home charging every night — the Sierra EV AT4 costs $12,924 more over five years than the gas equivalent. Rely on DC fast charging as your primary method, and the gap balloons to nearly $24,000.
Could the Math Ever Flip?
Yes, but the conditions are narrow. If you land a cheap overnight time-of-use rate — say 9¢/kWh instead of the flat 17.5¢ residential average — annual charging drops to $634.50, saving roughly $600 more per year than the flat-rate scenario. That still only narrows the 5-year gap to about $9,900 in the gas truck's favor. It doesn't flip it.
The only way the EV truck actually wins within five years is mileage — a lot of it. Running the marginal fuel-and-maintenance savings (about $0.11/mile combined) against the roughly $21,150 fixed disadvantage in depreciation and insurance, you'd need to drive around 38,000 miles a year for five years straight to break even. That's fleet-level use, not a typical personal truck owner.
On incentives: based on Celvari's read of the ev_incentives dataset (42 rows covering state-level programs), most state truck rebates cap eligibility somewhere between $55,000 and $65,000 MSRP. At roughly $80,000, the Sierra EV AT4 sits above nearly every one of those caps — and with the federal $7,500 credit repealed, there's no backstop left to close the gap. None of this means EVs are a bad deal — it means an $80,000 electric truck against a $60,000 gas truck is a specific, expensive edge case. Electrek's coverage this week of Nissan reviving the Pixo as a sub-$25,000 entry-level EV, and the ongoing price war pressure from Chinese automakers (Senator Slotkin's comments about a possible Trump-Xi market-access deal are worth watching, since any influx of low-cost Chinese EVs would only intensify price competition), both point the same direction: the closer EV and gas MSRPs get, the faster the EV wins on total cost. The GMC Sierra EV AT4 is a genuinely impressive truck, and KBB is right that it kills range anxiety. But at current pricing, weight-driven tire costs, and early-stage EV truck depreciation trends, it does not beat a gas Sierra 1500 AT4 on total cost over five years for a normal 15,000-mile-a-year owner — the gap runs from roughly $13,000 to $24,000 depending on how you charge.
