Disability Risk by Occupation: The BLS Data That Should Scare Desk Workers Too

There's an intuitive assumption embedded in how most people think about disability risk: physical, manual-labor occupations are dangerous, and office jobs are safe. It's directionally true for acute workplace injury — construction, transportation, and manufacturing dominate BLS injury and illness incidence data by a wide margin. But acute workplace injury is only one slice of what actually generates long-term disability claims, and the occupations that look "safe" by that narrow measure carry meaningful disability risk from causes the injury statistics don't capture at all.

What the Injury Data Actually Measures

BLS incidence rates track recordable workplace injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time-equivalent workers, broken out by industry (NAICS code) and occupation (SOC code). By this measure, construction, warehousing, transportation, and healthcare support occupations post the highest rates — often several times the rate seen in professional, scientific, and technical services. If you're only looking at this dataset, the conclusion "manual labor = high disability risk, desk job = low disability risk" seems obvious.

But this dataset measures workplace injuries specifically. It doesn't capture the two categories that actually dominate long-term disability claims industry-wide: musculoskeletal disorders (many of which develop cumulatively, not from a single workplace incident, and affect desk workers through repetitive strain and prolonged sitting at rates that surprise most people) and mental health conditions, which the Council for Disability Awareness and group LTD carrier data consistently show as one of the two or three leading causes of long-term disability claims across nearly every occupation category, including white-collar professional roles.

Duration Differs by Cause, Not Just Occupation

The type of condition driving a disability claim matters as much as the occupation itself when it comes to how long a claim runs — and duration is what actually determines your cumulative income gap, not just whether a claim occurs. Musculoskeletal claims average around 12 months. Mental health claims tend to run longer, often 18 months or more. Cancer-related claims frequently extend past 24 months. A desk-based professional with a long mental-health-related claim can accumulate a larger total income gap than a construction worker with a shorter, more acute musculoskeletal claim from a single injury — even though the construction occupation has the higher raw injury incidence rate.

Building a Risk-Adjusted Coverage Number

The planning-relevant number isn't "is my occupation dangerous" — it's an expected-loss calculation that combines your probability of disability, the expected duration if it happens, and your income gap during that period:

expected_annual_loss = P(disability) × E(duration) × monthly_gap

From there, a risk-adjusted coverage recommendation typically applies a conservative multiplier — often in the 1.5x to 2x range — to account for the asymmetry between under-insuring (catastrophic) and over-insuring (merely inefficient):

recommended_coverage = expected_loss × risk_aversion_factor

This framework produces meaningfully different recommendations than a flat "get coverage equal to X% of your salary" rule of thumb, because it accounts for your specific occupation's disability probability and the duration profile of the conditions most likely to affect people in that role — not just the headline injury rate.

Why This Changes the LTD Coverage Conversation
