That used 2021 Mercedes S580 looks like the safest thing you could park in a driveway. Five-figure price cut, radar cruise control, a cabin so quiet it's basically a nap pod. But did you check how many owners have filed NHTSA complaints on it? Or whether the crash-test rating you're relying on exists for that exact model year?

Safety ratings are the part of a used-car listing people trust most and verify least. A rating describes the car as it was tested when new. It says nothing about the specific car you're about to buy: its open recalls, its aging sensors, or what it costs to fix the systems that make it "safe."

This post uses a few Jalopnik stories as a launching point. It then works through the numbers for three very different cars: a $100K luxury sedan, a $34K luxury sedan, and a 37-year-old sports car with almost no modern safety data.

What the Source Stories Actually Tell a Used Buyer

Of the five Jalopnik pieces in this batch, three matter for a used-car safety decision.

The nap-vehicle piece. In "I've Got A Six Figure Budget For The Ultimate Nap Vehicle! What Car Should I Buy?", Sam is helping his dad shop with a budget upwards of $200,000. That's a comfort-first shopper, and comfort-first luxury cars are usually loaded with driver-assist hardware: adaptive cruise, lane centering, cameras, radar, air suspension. Every one of those systems is a safety feature on the window sticker and a repair line item five years later.

The Trans Am piece. Jalopnik's "1989 Pontiac 20th Anniversary Trans Am For Sale With 30,000 Miles Will Thrill You With Its Turbo V6" notes that when new it had the quickest 0-to-60 time of any American production car. It also sits at the opposite end of the safety spectrum. It was built before ESC, before side-impact standards, and before modern crash testing, and it's now 37 years old.

The fuel piece. "American Airlines Expecting To Pay Extra $1 Billion For Fuel Thanks To Iran War" is an aviation story, but it's a reminder that fuel costs are volatile. If you're pricing a turbocharged V6 or a big luxury V8, fuel belongs in your ownership budget next to repairs.

The other two stories (the Dopest Cars roundup and the Roman Space Telescope) have no bearing on a used-car safety decision, so I've left them out.

Three Cars, Three Different Kinds of Safety Risk

Here's how the three compare. Complaint counts are approximate figures from NHTSA's owner-complaint database, as cited in our earlier analyses. Counts creep upward as owners keep filing, so re-check the current number for your target car.

Two things jump out. First, the S-Class has roughly five times the G90's complaint count, but it's also a different price class and sales volume, so raw counts need context. Second, the Trans Am's "low" complaint count is meaningless. Few owners of a 37-year-old car file NHTSA complaints, so a thin complaint record on an old car means thin data, not low risk.

A Safety Rating Describes the Test Car, Not Your Car

Before the math, three limits on what a rating can tell you.

1. Not every car gets rated. NHTSA and IIHS don't test everything. Low-volume luxury and specialty vehicles often have gaps for a given model year. 2. Tests change, so old "Good" scores aren't comparable to new ones. IIHS added the small-overlap front test in 2012 and made its side test tougher in 2021. NHTSA overhauled its 5-Star program in 2011. A car that earned top marks under an easier protocol isn't necessarily equal to one that passed the harder one. 3. The rating assumes every safety system works. Airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, radar, and cameras all have to be intact and functioning. Worked Example: The Five-Year Cost of the "Safe" Features

Let's price what could go wrong over five years and 60,000 miles on the two luxury sedans. These are my working assumptions, not measured failure rates. NHTSA complaints are owner reports, not verified failure counts, so I use the S-Class's higher complaint volume only as a directional weight. Swap in your own numbers.

Add the purchase prices:

Here's what that tells you. The reliability-risk gap between the two cars is about $1,170. The purchase-price gap is $66,000. If your goal is a safe, comfortable, well-equipped sedan, the repair-risk difference is small next to the sticker difference. The S-Class is a good purchase only if you value what the extra $66,000 buys (ride, refinement, badge), not because it's meaningfully safer per dollar.

The 1989 Trans Am: Great Story, No Safety Data

The 20th Anniversary Trans Am, with its Buick-sourced turbo V6 and roughly 30,000 miles, is a legitimately interesting car. It's also a useful lesson in what "no data" means.

What's missing:

  • No electronic stability control (mandated for the 2012 model year)
  • No backup camera (required on new vehicles from May 2018)
  • No automatic emergency braking (the industry voluntary commitment reached nearly all new cars by 2022)
  • No side-impact or small-overlap testing comparable to today's
  • Airbags: federal mandates phased in through the 1990s, with all new passenger cars required to have them by the 1998 model year. Confirm exactly what this specific 1989 car has, because it sits early in that transition.

Age-related risks matter more than mileage. 30,000 miles over 37 years is roughly 810 miles a year. Low mileage doesn't stop rubber, fluids, and webbing from aging. Typical shop estimates I'd budget before driving it regularly:

Check Where the Car Lived, Not Just How It Drives

One safety risk that ratings never capture is flood or hail damage, which can corrode airbag modules, wiring harnesses, and sensors long before anything fails visibly.

Run these before you make an offer, whether the car is $34K or $100K.

  1. Pull the exact-year NHTSA and IIHS ratings. Confirm they exist for that year, trim, and body style.
  2. Count NHTSA complaints for the exact model year, then look at the component categories (airbags, suspension, electrical, service brakes), not just the total.
  3. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Open recalls matter most for airbags, seatbelts, and fuel systems.
  4. Ask for proof of every recall repair. A dealer service record beats a verbal "it was done."
  5. Check the airbag warning light during startup. It should illuminate and then go out.
  6. Look at the windshield. An aftermarket or replaced windshield on a camera-equipped car needs documented calibration.
  7. Test every driver-assist function: adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, blind-spot warning, and automatic braking alerts on a real road.
  8. Inspect the seatbelts for fraying, slow retraction, or a locked-out retractor.
  9. Check for collision or flood signs: uneven panel gaps, overspray, musty smell, silt in the trunk or under carpets.
  10. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection with scan-tool access to module codes. Budget $200 to $400 for it. On a $100K car that's a rounding error.

The nap-vehicle shopper, the Trans Am collector, and the $34K sedan buyer share one blind spot. They're all trusting a rating, a badge, or a story about a car instead of checking the specific car.
