EV vs gas savings in California vs Florida vs Texas: 5 years, EPA standard sport utility vehicle 4wd class, 15,000 miles a year
Florida has the largest projected 5-year saving from an EV instead of a gas car in the EPA standard sport utility vehicle 4wd class: $5,759 ($161 more than the next state). California: $5,598; Florida: $5,759; Texas: $4,574. These are projected differences in total cost of ownership in US dollars at each state's electricity and gasoline prices, for an EV at 2.48 miles per kWh and a gas car at 18.5 mpg bought at the same price, not a prediction of your own costs.
The same assumptions in every column
In this comparison of California, Florida, and Texas (projected totals in US dollars), every column uses an EV at 2.48 miles per kWh and a gas car at 18.5 mpg, both in the EPA standard sport utility vehicle 4wd class and both bought at $35,000, driven 15,000 miles a year for 5 years. Only the state changes, and with it the electricity and gasoline prices. Each column is its own call to the same API with the same inputs. The calculation table reports the exact dollar figures the API returned, with the low and high end of the savings range for each state.
What the projection leaves out
For California, Florida, and Texas, the projected totals in US dollars leave out the real purchase prices of the vehicles you would compare, your insurance quotes, your utility's rate plan and the resale value of your particular cars. The range is the 10th to 90th percentile of the savings across 71 historical 5-year windows of gasoline and electricity prices (BLS CPI through 2026-08). It shows how far fuel prices alone could move the answer and is not a forecast. Purchase price, insurance, depreciation, maintenance, incentives and your own mileage are held at the values shown; the range does not include them varying. The EV and the gas car are given the same purchase price, so each column is the difference in operating cost: fuel, maintenance, insurance and registration, less resale value. Home charger cost is zero; the API requires a battery size its cost arithmetic does not use, so 60 kWh is sent. Depreciation is an authored estimate (15 percent a year for both vehicles), not data. Maintenance per mile comes from the AAA Your Driving Costs study.

Calculation provenance
Prices: California's latest EIA residential electricity price, 0.3361 dollars per kWh, and gasoline at 4.336 dollars a gallon, derived from EIA's state and national price files (EIA publishes a per-gallon state price for nine states only). Growth: the ten-year compound rate of the BLS consumer price index for gasoline (6.15 percent a year) and for electricity (4.69 percent a year), carried forward. Sample size UNAVAILABLE: the prices are state averages and the price index a national series, so neither has a sample size to report. Inspect the API. Response hashes and retrieval times are retained separately in the calculation record.

Winner: Florida. Objective: maximize. Margin to next option: 161.27 USD. Assumption: Largest projected savings of the stated EV over the stated gas car, over the stated years only. Where you live is not a choice this compares: it shows how much of the saving is the local fuel prices. Your own vehicles, prices, mileage and electricity plan will move the numbers.
